GSDCA-WDA renames magazine; adds rules and increases rates
The GSDCA-WDA Board of Directors recently renamed the club's magazine, increased advertising rates and added new rules for published materials. The changes will be implemented beginning with the next issue, March-April. Formerly the "Newsletter," the magazine is now called "The Complete German Shepherd Dog," based on a recommendation from the publication committee. The club also implemented new managerial rules regarding publication, including content, images, closing dates, and increased ad rates, among others. WDA President Danny Spreitler said the name change had been debated for more than a year.
"We felt 'Newsletter' did not reflect the
true image of our organization, our breed or the commitment
made to produce a quality publication," he said. "We wanted
our magazine to reflect the greatness in our breed and the
diversity of the involvement of our members. . . One of our
goals was to have a name that 'said it all'. I think the
team did a great job and with one title summarized what our
great breed is all about. Our magazine is the one asset that
touches the hand of every member."
The announcement came in the Jan-Feb issue of the magazine (which arrived here on March 6). The committee says the changed will improve the magazine's quality. Below is a synopsis: Beginning with the next issue, the Publication Committee must approve all material before pages are laid out. Articles, article ideas, photos and ads must all go to the committee chairman, Cindy Petersen. The closing dates for each issue have been moved back two weeks, which the committee says will allow it time to review all materials before printing. Spreitler said the change was necessary in order to ensure the integrity of information (particularly with training articles). He calls committee members "our quality improvement, sales, marketing and product edvelopment committee." Members will also be charged with reviewing articles for informational purposes, rather than those that simply serve as self-promotion; and they actively seek subjects and events for articles. "They are our front-line for advertising revenue," he said. Ad rates for the magazine will increase $20 across the board, including flat rate fees for litter announcements (only available to members) and kennel listings. See the chart below. Spreitler said increased rates for all aspects of publishing the magazine (except those of the editor and designer) were to blame. "The magazine is the front piece of our organization, but it doesn't pay for itself," he said. "Our Budget and Finance Committee teamed up with our Publication Committee and felt the increases were necessary. The magazine will also begin two new sections in its next issue, a classified section and another for a photo contest (open only to WDA members). The members of the WDA Publication Committee are Cindy Petersen (chair), John Henkel, Nadia Adams and Fernando Burgos. Cindy can be reached at CindyNTill@msn.com.
