Note: You are welcome to email us winners photos from this event; we will post immediately. Thank you.
Judge Gloria Birch, Fut/Mat males – Bitch Classes A really big thank you to all of you that worked so hard to make this year’s Canadian National Specialty another huge success. This is the second time I have been blessed by the privilege of judging the beautiful bitches. It was truly an honor, and one I will remember because I had such a good time. This year, bitches were better in structure and temperament than the last time I judged. You should be commended for breeding better dogs. As I said at the after show dinner, you folks put on the most relaxed, well run, fun shows ever. Everything ran smoothly even my very different entrance for the class winners. The class winners were not the only good ones. There were several of the top four or five females who could easily have won. In these cases, a personal preference prevails. There will always be speculation about the winners. I tried to show you why maybe a certain dog that was of good quality did not place higher. I hope you noticed that I do not like dragging rear toes, or poor temperaments. There were few. You have come a long way from this, and it was evident throughout the classes. The majority of the bitches were sound coming and going. I had one dog with a bad bite and one with a missing tooth. That was remarkable. Congratulations to all of you that entered and showed these sound German Shepherds. Since I judged the Futurity and Maturity males first, we'll talk briefly about those winners. These two classes were very deep in quality. I could only choose one, but placed the dogs in order. My ultimate winner in the Futurity was Tazzman's Aregon, who went on to go Select. He has a beautiful masculine head, is dark, richly pigmented, clean coming and going, with a tremendous attitude. His beautiful clean front opens well past his nose, and is noticed in his extended sidegait. Nothing is lost in this big fellow, except the tip of one of his ears. The Maturity male Trafalgar's Full Throttle was this year’s Canadian Grand Victor. Little did I know that this would happen as I gave him the nod. He is a lovely boy with a really excellent, effortless side movement. He has good rear drive which is carried through his iron back to open his front, which gives him a perfectly balanced, extreme sidegait. I have always said, "I like dogs as angulated as possible as long as they are sound,” and both Futurity/Maturity winners fall into this category. If I were to change the Maturity dog, I would give him a little better head and bigger bones, but he is a package that cannot be denied. I did not remember ever seeing either of these guys before. It was a refreshing surprise. Let’s get on with the important job of placing four bitches in each class. What a hard thing to do, as there were so many beautiful bitches. Each winner was of excellent quality and a joy to watch in the winners class. The winners could not be faulted. Woodside's Jessica James was the Junior female winner. What a showgirl with a promising future. She has a balanced gait and iron back she lead the class the whole way to first place. The Senior female, Long's Peak Ginger Bred Cookie, was in a tough class. Her lovely dark pigment, beautiful plush coat, came with movement that could not be denied as she was pulled out for consideration in my winners class with the big girls.
The winner of the 12 to 18 class,
Kiefernfels If Life Were Like That, is close to being perfect.
You can see she is a "girly girl" even from a distance. She carried
herself elegantly, with correct size, and proportions, clean in
every way. The longer she moved the more she extended herself,
because she is extreme and balanced at both ends. This beautiful
female in every way was my winners bitch. It was exciting to
find out later that she is owned by a Canadian. Yes! With her
terrific attitude, moving with beautiful timing, she easily obtained
a Select title. It was a pleasure to judge this class as they are your Country's best example of what you folks are breeding. And a beautiful class of bitches it was. The Canadian Bred class was won by Kennelwood's Mystique Impulse. She is a really outstanding, good boned girl, with dark rich pigment, a plush coat, totally sound coming and going with a strong outreaching side gait. She is 13 months old and already has star quality. She got a little tired in winners. The winner of the Bred By class, Kridler's Nutmeg v. Signature, was another outstanding female with beautiful type. She has an extended sidegait, was clean coming and going with everything in the right place. Her lovely outline and wonderful condition made her the easy winner. Her handler did a terrific job. Being the owner and showing your own dog can sometimes be a challenge. She made it look easy for him. The Open bitch, Winsomes Hollywood Celebearty, followed suit. She is clean at both ends, is lovely type with dark eyes and again, moved with ease covering the maximum of ground around the ring to first place. She never quit and worked really hard to win the Open class. This was a class packed of beauties and she worked her heart out. She ended up being the Reserve winners bitch. It was really sad for me having only one Veteran female, as I do so love the old ones. CH Crescents Helma AD was no exception to the quality inherent in the bitch classes. What a gorgeous older girl, with an outstanding attitude. I am sure she has brought her owners a world of happiness. Well, that was what I did in my week. Hope you enjoyed my judging and could follow along to see why I placed the dogs accordingly. I had such a really good time, and enjoyed every bit of it. It was thrilling to judge so many lovely bitches at your Canadian National Specialty. Thank you again.
Year after year, the great GSDCC Inc. puts on their
National Specialty Show in the beautiful Kitchener Memorial
Auditorium in Kitchener, Ontario. Futurity Female – Best in Futurity Kennelwoods Mystique Impulse A beautifully balanced bitch with perfect size and proportions. Beautiful black and tan color with an excellent head and ear set, and dark eye. Her topline is ideal with high wither, firm back, and correct lay and length of croup. In motion, she uses all her excellent structure, with an outreaching, effortless trot. Great attitude and temperament. Clean down and back. One of the highest quality bitches I’ve had the opportunity to judge.
Maturity Female – Best Opposite in Maturity Stylistic Chablis Hypnotiq A very high-withered bitch with an excellent topline standing and moving. Her size and proportions are ideal. Very feminine with extreme angulation on both ends. In motion, she uses her good shoulder and strong rear perfectly. Beautiful to watch sidegaiting and reasonable clean down and back. Her attitude and temperament is excellent, as she is overall.
Best in Maturity TRAFALGAR’s Full Throttle A beautiful balanced male of medium size and correct proportions. Very correct angulation fore and aft. Good secondary sex characteristics at this age. Beautiful black and red color with a very dark eye. His shoulder is laid on correctly and is in perfect harmony with his strong driving hindquarter. Standing and moving, he presents an excellent outline and displays great attitude and character. As I write this belated critique, he has gone on to Can GV and US GV. Need I say more?
Junior Male Woodside’s High Voltage A good-sized junior male with a very good outline standing and moving. Totally out of coat at this show, he simply performed perfectly and beat a nice class of juniors. He has a great male head already. Dark eye, strong ear set, good neck, high wither, firm middle-piece and decent croup. He is an excellent sidegaiter with a little puppy looseness down and back. Great character. I predict great things for this one.
Senior Male Woodside’s Big and Rich A large, very handsome male with an excellent head piece, dark eye and ear set. Very well-angulated fore and aft. He is high-withered standing and moving with a very firm back. A beautiful black and tan with a super coat and condition. Sidegaiting is excellent and is clean down and back Very good temperament with great expression. An excellent puppy.
12-18 Male Kaleef’s Cochise v Kenlyn A beautiful black and red, medium-sized male. Excellent proportions with very correct angulation on both ends. He is very masculine and delivers beautifully in motion. He has great attitude and out-moved a very high-quality class of males. Very strong side-mover and clean down and back. An excellent young male with an exciting future, I predict.
Canadian Bred Male Sheobaldn’s Grayson Camareigh An absolutely beautiful dark black and tan male with an excellent head, dark eyes, great expression and the desire to go. He is correct medium-size, very masculine and very balanced moving, correct angulation and proportions. He appears as though he could go all day. He is clean down and back and won over a top class of males on a solid moving performance.
Bred-by Exhibitor Male Windy Acres All in the Family A medium-large black and tan saddle marked male with very good secondary sex characteristics. He is very well-angulated on both ends. Very high-withered with a god back and slightly steep croup. Nice head type with a dark eye, strong mask and good ear set. He is a steady sidegaiter, showing good balance in motion. Clean down and back, very good temperament. Overall, an excellent entry.
Open Male – Winners Dog, Best of Winners and Select Mar Haven’s Next in Line Reno A large, very masculine, dark black and tan male who doesn’t take a wrong step. He is gorgeous standing and very exciting sidegaiting. Very strong correctly chiseled head, dark eye, clean muzzle and stop, very good ear set. He is well-angulated fore and aft and uses this to deliver his flawless gait. Excellent attitude and character and is clean down and back. He won over a very, very impressive class of top-quality males. In an outstanding winners class, he continued to excel.
Reserve Winners Dog – 2nd Open Male WeLove DuChien’s Army of One Army is still the great dog I gave MV in the States in 2006 and watched go US GV in 2007. He is a large, stallion-type male with a great shoulder, outstanding sidegait, excellent overline standing and moving. In the open class, he didn’t seem to deliver quite as strong as my first entry. In the Reserve Winners class, he looked great. Make no mistake: This is a great dog who has already contributed.
Veteran Male Bill-Mar’s Here Comes Trouble A beautiful black and red male of medium size with excellent proportions. Very masculine with good head, dark eye, and confident expression. An outstanding sidegaiter with excellent angulation on both ends. Very solid overline and underline both standing and moving. He has been a multiple Select Excellent male in the States and has made an outstanding contribution to our great breed. What a pleasure to judge a Veteran of this quality.
