Judge Cappy Pottle – Dog Classes

Overview:

I loved judging our National this year.  I had a wonderful time and learned a lot.  The dogs were just beautiful and the show site and ring were user-friendly.  It was a relaxed enjoyable atmosphere.  I want to thank all of
you who voted for me and the four who didn't because I got to judge for three days and I really enjoyed that, not only because I like to judge, but because the quality was so deep.  I also got to watch  Michael and Helen judge.

I appreciate and thank all you handlers for showing your clients' dogs under me.  That includes the many talented young handlers and the old and new handlers, the owner/handers and the over thirty-five challenged handlers.  With one exception, all of you were good sports, did my bidding and showed your dogs in the manner that I ultimately preferred.  My preference of course is to judge a much loved, trained, collected, and not too fast runner.  In other words, a German Shepherd that is shown on a loose lead not just for me, but for everyone to see.  Many of you do just that with great grace and and ability  that only years of experience
can provide, a style of your own and a lot of practice running.

I know you put in hours of pro-bono work getting ready for a National and help a lot of owners.  I know you burst your lungs and twist your back, fall on your knees, wrench your shoulder, pull a muscle or ligaments, get a headache, go without eating so that the hundreds of spectators who are usually GSDCA members,
friends, judges, owners, get to watch you run so that they can best enjoy and evaluate your dogs and sit and watch the show.  Without you all we wouldn't have a show.  I don't think handling is a thankless job but I do know from my own experience that it is a hard one, even though often rewarding.  I have not spent
my entire life handling dogs, but I did do my fair share of running around the ring and I know it's not an easy day's work.  I know that you lose often, more than you win, even when you are successful.   I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate and admire your efforts.  You were great!  Your double handlers
were pretty good too, except for the winners class. That was a hoot.

I want to say something about the other dogs who didn't place and their owners and breeders, who weren't the luckiest ones.  I am one with you and have been like you all my life.  So much time and effort goes into your effort, so try to stay passionate and keep up the good work because many of your dogs will become
champions.  You have to stay with it because you are doing a good job.  The quality was very high.  I saw more young dogs, besides the winners, who didn't place than I ever have that showed promise of being able to finish.  You are showing that you have taken up the challenge of investing in this worthwhile venture of loving, being dedicated to, and and improving our great breed. To you, I give many thanks, as you are the ones who gave me an entry.  I want to thank Gloria Birch for getting me to the show and always being there.  Thanks for John
Waldrop for picking us up from the airport in Houston.  The hotel in Beaumont was a wonderful place to stay thanks to Nancy Nellis Show Chairman. Wholehearted thanks goes to our dear friends Brad and Kathy Hays for driving us everywhere and over everything and eating with us and Don and Beth Knight our other dear
friends.  Thanks to the Ring Stewards who all worked diligently all day long: Irene Ferrant, Bob Grady, Dick Jones, and especially to Tom Mesdag, and Karin Wagner who specially took care of me again.  Thanks also to Bob Lindsay for taking great videos, and special thanks to the host GSDCA Officers, Board Membership, and President Gail Hardcastle, and to the members of the GSDC of Beaumont.

6 - 9 month dogs
1 - Anne-Isle's Patrick
Breeder/Owner: Martha Simonett
Ch Kenlyn-Kaleef's Hudson v Anne-Isle x Ch Anne-Isle's Cassiopeia
What a wonderful way to start judging the three days of my dog classes.  I've never seen a junior puppy class this deep in quality.  There were very few in the class who were not stellar show contenders.  Patrick my class winner, is a standard exemplar of the near ideal 6-9 Puppy.  A richly pigmented black and
reddish tan, he has a wonderful exuberant attitude that immediately captured my attention.  His proportions are near perfect which enabled smooth, effortless movement with strong driving transmission that resulted in perfect timing which is seldom visible in such a baby.  He was just two weeks over six months.  I was
extremely pleased to see him go on to win Best Puppy.

2 - Hickoryhill's Kryptonite
Breeders: Steve and Christine Grainger
Owners: Steve and Christine Grainger and John Schacht
Ch Hickoryhill's Porter House x Langenau's Leyla of Stoneway
A few days difference in age, this very handsome, big-boned black and tan male moved powerfully around the ring with self assurance, excellent timing and very good angulation. He is a bit out of alignment going away with one hock. Another top notch envoy for the breed.

3 - Karizma's Sambuca Di Amore
Breeder/Owner: Iza Kabuska
FV Ch Kaleef's It's All About Me x Karizma's Anisette
A month older than the first two, this very dark black and tan male presented a beautiful outline, an iron back and sloping croup as he effortlessly traveled around the ring, feet gliding just above the ground.  He was all heart and never stopped driving forward.  He moved a little closer than ideal going away.

4 - Jerrwen's Law and Order
Breeder: Wendy and Gerald Bobak
Owner: Edward J. Ferrell & Gerald Bobak
Ch Bill Mars Here Comes Trouble x Ch Jerrwen's Madison Avenue
This elegant big-boned black and reddish tan male, the same age as Sambuca, carries himself well with smooth coordination around the ring.  He has a beautiful head and expression.  He could be a little better on one side going away.

9 - 12 month dogs
1 - Woodsides High Voltage
Breeders: Sandy Anderson & Linda Wheeler
Owners: Lori Knightly & Cindy Bartley & Jaudon Behrman & Sylvain Genereaux
Ch Kenlyn's Calvin HiCliff Kaleef x Woodsides KH Expression Galiano
Another beautiful class of puppies. Spectacular side movement on my final winner which thrilled the crowd. But so did the second place with his fluid ground covering performance. First Knight was the smoother of the two.  It was a tough choice as both dogs were outstanding.  Great power and drive with High Voltage who was a bit rough and erratic at times being run too fast.  He got steadier and more fluid the longer he went.  Beautiful neck. Very impressive shoulder with a driving rear.  Little long in back.  A rough diamond of beautiful type.
Black and tan.

2 - Lyloak's First Knight
Breeder: Jason Lyle
Owner: Jason Lyle & Joe Bihari
Ch Welove Du Chien's Army of One x Lyloaks Sugar Maple, TC, PT
Very handsome and richly pigmented black and reddish tan expertly handled and a joy to watch. Like his competition, it was hard to keep your eyes off him.  I'm sure these two will meet again. Like the 6-9 class winner, First Knight is just about as close as you can get to what the standard describes  and sound in all
respects.

3 - Peters' Elite Name Your Poise-'N
Breeder: Zoriana Peters & Jane Cooper & Susanne Wylie
Owner: Zoriana & Richard Peters
Ch Hi-Cliff Free 'N Easy x Ch Laurel's Poise N'Ivy V Jada, CD, RN
The third and fourth were similar in type, style, and movement and could have been switched around. This “elite” youngster kept driving forward which made it very hard to put any equally good dog over him. I would have liked a bit longer croup. Remember these all were exceptional puppies. The class was loaded with
quality.

4 - Rosewood's English Channel
Breeder/Owner: Bo Vujovich
Ch Rosewoods Maestro x Tonor's Divine Ms M
Channel was in the same league as my other placements. Again a beautifully put-together masculine black and tan. Excellent extension and timing. He moved with power but not quite as smoothly or consistent as my other placements. Again many more good dogs in this class. A joy to watch and a joy to judge.

12-18 month dogs
1 - Welove Du Chien's Last Hurrah
Breeders: J. Kerner, J. Moebius & R. Eaton
Owners; Jeffrey Moebius
Ch Marquis Stealing the Show x Welove Du Chiens Be All You Can Be
Beautiful, stylish, medium to large dog with a gorgeous head & expression. Black and reddish tan. He is a glider.  He moved effortlessly around the ring suspending on air. You could put a glass of water on that back and not spill a drop.

2 - Kaleef's Cochise v Kenlyn
CH HiCliff Bronson Kaleef x CH Pleasant Hill's Camille v Kenlyn
Breeder: James and Sheree Moses and Kent Boyles
Owner: Sheree Moses
A smaller dog than my other placements but again beautiful type and beautifully timed movement, close to the ground. Sound in all respects and good extension. More coat and pigment than my first place but  took more steps to cover the same amount of ground.  Cochise has great drive and attitude and puts it all together
very well.

3 - Wolf Creek Orion of Merivern
Breeders: P. Walker and M. Imhoff
Owner: Pat Walker
Ch Kenlyns Aries v Hicliff x Tazzmans Demilo of Merivern
A large boned very handsome masculine, dark, richly pigmented sable male who moves with determination and enthusiasm from a happy joy of life attitude.  He has a balanced extended side gait and carries a nice coat too. I'd like a longer croup. His bite is not perfect in alignment which is something to pay attention to in breeding as he has a lot to offer. I really liked Orien. My first Select Champion was a sable.

4 - Goodfella Of Oh My
Breeder/Owner: Myra Shear
Ch Marquis Stealing  The Show x Ch Do Si of Oh-My, TC
Not only a Goodfella but a solid boned big attractive fella. He moves very well around the ring in such impressive company. He has more compact proportions, with his short firm back he appears higher on the leg but I am sure he will grow into his frame and become an extremely impressive powerful male.

Novice dogs
1 - Shanty's Monte Carlo
Breeders: Sharon Buckley& Jean M. Lallensack
Owners: Jessie & Cynthia Perry & Sharon Buckley
Ch Karagin's Hoodlum of Castlehill x Ch Shanty's Tangueray
Monte is a very happy fellow who, when he finally settled down to the business of showing instead of showing off his personality, easily fell into easy, ground covering suspension. He lifts a little high until he settles down and is sound coming and going. He has beautiful type and carries a plush coat. He is richly pigmented dark black and tan male that reminds me of Zinfandel. Same style and attitude. A deserving win for handler and dog.

2 - Jim-Sina's Josh Turnbear V Winsome
Breeders: Frank & Kristine Fasano
Owners: William Laird
Ch Kaleefs Joshua v Kenlyn x Ch Winsome's Bearitney Spears
Josh has an excellent side gait and extension. Beautifully balanced, with a nice outline and smooth curves. Needs more coat and trimmings but makes up for it in movement and his presentation on a loose leash. Could have been out of coat.

3 - Firethorn Temple's Santiago
Breeders: Tom & Martha Elkins & Kerry Sachau
Owners: Tom & Martha Elkins
Ch Hi-Cliff Free N Easy x Tazzman's Kylie of Elkins
This dog could be described as black with a dark gray-tan color. The insides of his legs and feet were shaded and marked with an outline of charcoal. He has very interesting markings.  I remember that Fred Migliore had a dog that was called soot foot because his feet looked like he stepped in soot. Santiago is a large, well-angulated dog that carries himself very well. He is a little long in back and not quite collected. He has very good angulation and covers ground aggressively most of the time. He let down a little near the end

4 - Marquis Victor
Breeders: P. Johnson & D. Oster
Owners: Don Brown & Joe Balga
Ch Braunhaus Samuri x Marquis I'm So Vain
This guy was a little erratic in performance and needs a longer croup with a better tail set. But Victor doesn't give up and drives hard. He may give a few of the others a run for their money in the next couple of years. Not quite into his body coordination and smoothness.  He has beautiful pigment with a dark black and tan plush coat.

Bred By Exhibitor Dogs
1 - Skylyne's Walk The Line
Breeders: J. Beyer & M. Graham
Owners: Jon A. Beyer
Ch Joelle's Geovanni of Lonwood x Vici's Heavenly Exception TC
I was disappointed that there were not more entries in this class but all three of the placements were very nice dogs and close to the standard in size and movement. They were sound in temperament and clean coming and going. My first place was a gorgeous richly pigmented black and reddish tan male with beautiful style and excellent balanced proportions. He has a wonderful arch of neck and outline of smooth curves with all the trimmings. He was so pretty that it was hard to keep your eyes off of him. He has a nice, fluid, outreaching side gait. Moves a little fast for me.

2 - Kridler's Basil V Signature
Breeders: Tari Kridler & Joe & Leslie Beccia
Owners: Tari K Kridler & Joe Beccia
Ch Kenlyns Aries v HiCliff x Ch Krindlers Tanzanite v Signature
Basil is a medium-sized black and tan male with good bone. He has a very pretty head and expression, with a beautiful coat. He also moved very well with good extension at both ends. Could have a little better tail set.

3 - Marydon's Alaskian Pocket Aces
Breeders/Owners: Mary R Daniels & Tamara DeGross & SL Smith & Chelsea Causey-DeGross
Ch Kaleefs Equalizer x Marydons Alaskan Lightening
Pocket Aces is an attractive male, richly pigmented with a black and tan coat. He is well proportioned and very sound. He obviously loved his owner, whom he looked at often as they moved around the ring. I admired her for being in that large ring with him. He is also a nicely balanced moving dog with good extension, but lost his stride a few times and his coordination while he was having such a good time. He lifted a little high in front with all his enthusiasm.

American Bred Dogs
1 - Windsome's Dream Love Bear Peddacre
Breeders: F & K Fasano
Owners: Margaret M Douglas & Tom & Sherrie Landry
Ch Kaleefs Joshua v Kenlyn x Ch Winsome's Bearitney Spears
There was a lot of nice dogs in this class competition. Love Bear was the first dog to come into the ring. He stayed there throughout the judging as he moved beautifully around the ring with balanced ease of motion and strong front reach and drive.  He also was admirably handled. The black and rich tan Love Bear is close to the standard in proportions and body type with short firm back. He drives and moves forward at the same time in synch and he does it with ease. His feet hover above the ground in suspension. He is sound in all respects, with excellent fluid timing in motion. He looks so finished but is still a youngster at heart. He won't be two until next February.

2 - Avion's Armstrong
Breeders: Claire Drosdick
Owners: Todd Cosper & Claire Drosdick
Ken-Delaine's Marksman x Avion Paris
Armstrong is an extreme, stylish, black and tan male. He was beautifully presented. His color and markings are very flashy but I like a richer pigment. His warm tan fades to lighter cream on the inside of his legs and trimmings. I would also like to see a stronger muzzle which would improve a more masculine head. Then his head would be in better proportion with his large size. Armstrong moves very well and pushed the class winner. A lovely mature dog.

3 - Sanbob's Hot Tamale Of Witmer
Breeders: Bob & Sandy Lindsay
Owners: Susan Witmer & Bob & Sandy Lindsay
Ch Witmer's Jamiroquai x Sanbob's Genny Light
Hot Tamale is a big dog, and a richly pigmented, ground covering stallion male. He has softer ears. He acted like he might have had a slight ear infection. He has a beautiful expression and good ear carriage. He is a long striding dog and should be a knock out when he matures. He is a few days younger than Love Bear.

4 - Winsome's Ray Bearone V Eko-Lan
Breeders: F & K Fasano & F Migliore
Owners: Joe & Leslie Beccia
Ch Marquis Stealing The Show x Winsome's Samantha Eko-Lan
A large, beautiful, plush, richly pigmented black and tan mature dog who has tremendous front reach. He has a nice big head. Once in a while he'd give the impression of dropping his head and slinking down in front because of all the extension. He wasn't high behind, just a very level topline with a far reaching front. Once he got going he was a beautiful sight. His mid-piece could have been more firm.

Open Dogs
1 - Deray's I'm The One
Breeder/Owner: Dolores Friberg
Rosewoods Music Man x DeRays Corrine Corrina
There were two different types of dogs in the smaller Open Class, but the quality was very good. The first and the third were mature, deep bodied, lower stationed dogs and the second and fourth placements were firmer and dryer. My first place was the “One” because his type is lovely and he was an extreme, balanced, sound, fluid mover. He was a bit on the heavy side and I'd like to see richer tan pigmentation with a bit more black.  He occasionally lifted in front when he was moving too fast. Nonetheless, a beautifully put together male.

2 - Cade Of Fran Jo
B-Fran & Joan Ford
O-Jeff Pyle & Nick Fedorow, Jr.
Ch Jake of Fran-Jo Anne-Isle x Sue of Fran Jo
A fluid, ground covering mover who kept driving his way up. I was glad to see Fran Jo represented in the winners when I saw the catalog. Cade is well muscled, hard, and dry with a richly pigmented black and reddish tan coat. He had to put a little more effort than the first place dog but kept pushing him strongly. At certain speeds he lifted a little in front. He needs undercoat and trimmings.

3 - Woodsides CK Jericho Stoneway
Breeders: Sandy Anderson & Bob Eaton & Linda Wheeler
Owners: Michael & Naomi Ebertin
Ch Kenlyns Calvin Hi-Cliff Kaleef x Ch Woodsides Futuristic
Large and big boned with beautiful body type; black and reddish tan. CK did not have the reach and drive of the two ahead of him but he had everything else. A picture of our standard with a plush coat and trimmings. He has an ideal head and expression and is a balanced, fluid, mover. Nice package.

4 - Kismet's Law And Order
Breeders: Dr. Robert & MaryEllen Kish
Owners: Dr. Marc & Lorraine Cohen & MaryEllen Kish
Ch Kismet's Sight For Sore Eyes x Ch Kismet's Pretty Lies N Alibis
A lovely black and reddish tan dry male. He is a well angulated mover. He is a little long and he is not as consistent in his timing and coordination as those ahead of him. He could use more coat and trimmings. He has a beautiful head and expression. Another very nice dog.

Veteran Dogs 7-9
1 - Ch Thompson's Midnight Shadow
Breeders: R & E Sottile & K & A Hysen
Owners: Pamela D Thompson
Ch Backachers Ruggiero V Milo x Kurdels Fancy & Fabulous
Shadow is an elegant black and tan male of beautiful type, proportions and outline with lovely length and arch of neck. Perfect proportions and topline, back and croup. Moves strongly with power, grace, and such willingness.

2 - Ch Depahl's Austin
Breeders/Owners: Paul & Denise Black Hollister
Ch Kismet's Heart Throb x Merivern's Harlot Of Eko-Lan
He has a wonderful larger than life attitude. Austin is richly pigmented black and tan very large male who eats up the ring with his large stride. This dog captured my heart the way he enthusiastically covered the ground so powerfully, reaching out with the determination of a youngster.

3 - Ch Caralonqed JD Drew Bleibtreu RN
Breeders: P Parsons & L Duerbeck & Smith & H Sherlock.
Owners: C. Kimerer & P Parson & H Sherlock & T Bartley
Ch Hickoryhill's Bull Durham x Ch Caralonqed A Cut Above
A beautiful plush black and tan with an extreme, easy ground covering gait and wonderful to see suspension. JD is very smooth mover, nice and easy with a cute personality and a mind of his own.

4 - Ch Andaka-Zederland's Ur It CD, RAE
Breeders/Owners: Daphne J Szczuka & Betty Sheesley
Ch Andaka-Zederland's Keno UD, HS, OA x Silverhill's Sumthin Special
A large, substantial black and reddish tan male who glided around the ring in easy, ground covering suspension. This big boy acted like he's done it all. And with all those titles he just about has. Everyone of these veterans were wonderful and a tribute to the breed. I wish I could have placed them all.

Veteran Dogs 9 and Over
1 - Ch Todor Pilgrim No Regrets CD, HT, NA, NAJ, NAP, NJP
Breeders: Sharon Todoroff & Shirley Raymond
Owner: Ann Jeddeloh
Ch Todorhaus Tennessee Jed, HT x Todorhaus Raising Arizona
This big, black and reddish tan male was a beautiful conditioned nine year old. He has nice easy suspending movement. There was only one winner in this class. No regrets for this pilgrim. He has done it all. Look at that list of titles. He was rewarded with a rousing hand of applause. I just loved him. What a wonderful
way to conclude my judging.

Judge Helen Gleason – Specials

Click here to see a copy of Helen's checklist used during judging

The greatest award I have ever been given was to be elected by the membership to judge intersex at this year’s National.  As the Education chairperson I read, reread and teach the Standard of our Breed constantly.  When judging this year each animal was compared against the standard and placed accordingly.  Many love to see the handlers and dogs racing around the ring a break neck speed and the larger the animal, the longer the legs and the greater distance they can cover.  Is this correct? Absolutely not!  I was elected by the members to judge dogs and not act like a RINGMASTER.

While judging I attempted to give each dog and handler equal opportunity to present their animal to the best of their ability.  Because of the limited amount of time allotted to the judging of intersex only those dogs that were selected as top in their respected groups were really asked to work extensively.  The handlers who presented their dogs on loose leads were rewarded as the dogs did not forge and distort themselves when moving along the white wall.

The thank all of the exhibitors for permitting me to examine the animals without double handling them through the loose lead temperament test.  Although it may have not been obvious to the spectators we did have some dogs and bitches that were not quite as sure of themselves and these animals were placed at the rear of the lines.

Written critiques were available for all entries and I maintained the original of the 2 part carbon sets.  I hope the owners would are interested in them.  Notations are made for missing teeth, excessive spacing between teeth, worn incisors,  extra teeth  etc.  Notations were made for strong and or soft ears, etc.  I thank my scribe Bob Grady for underlining the descriptions for each dog as I called out the description for him.  I apologize if we missed circling some of the comments but we were under strict time constraints.

I believe that Saturday should be reserved for Specials only.  We lost 2 hours because of special presentations that could have easily been done on Friday.  The dogs were only judged for 8 hours-4 hours for dogs 8-12(dog photos 12-12:30) and 4 hours for bitches 2-6. (Bitch photos 6:30-7PM) The victory passes were limited to only a few minutes as photos had to be taken and dinner was at 8PM.

General overview:

Size is becoming a real problem, not only height at the withers but excessive length of body.  Bitches 22-24 inches  males 24-26”. Quite a few of the animals exhibited looseness of the elbows.  Temperaments were very good with the exception of a few animals that acted anxious and let me know they really did not want to be there.  These animals were placed at the end of each group.

I would rate the top 7 males Select, all other males were rated Excellent with the exception of the 10 dogs whose characters were less than correct.

I rated 10 females Select and all other females were rated Excellent with the   exception of 7 whose characters were less that correct.

Most eyes were dark to medium brown and blended well with the facial colorations.

Ears were strong with very few exceptions.

Complete dentition in all but 3 of the animals.  I noticed several of the animals had too much spacing between the teeth and the teeth did not appear to be large and strong.

Conditioning was lacking in some of the animals and their top lines were not as strong as I would like to see.  Some of this is again due to the excessive length of loins.

BITCHES

GRAND VICTRIX - BEST OF OPPOSITE SEX

368 HEINA - This young 2 1/2 year old female is as close to the written standard as any female I have ever judged.  A dark grey sable with excellent character-confident, noble and expressive.  She has a strong head, complete dentition, scissors bite, dark almond eyes. Her pigment is excellent and her coat is correct.

Normal size, normal proportions, substantial strong bones and her body is well developed.  She moved with a firm straight back, has a croup of normal length and her tail is correctly laid on.

Her legs are strong and straight in front with excellent feet and pasterns and very dark nail color, she stands correctly in the rear and moves soundly both coming and going with firm ligamentation and tight elbows. Her movement is breathtaking with excellent front reach and rear drive.  She is a short coupled balanced female who gives the impression that she would be able to work all day. Liz did a magnificent job of always guiding her around the ring on a loose lead.  She never raced, always trotted; I believe she could easily perform any of the tasks for which the German Shepherd is bred.

524 Eve - 7 year old truly beautiful female in excellent condition. Confident, noble.  Black and rich tan pigmentation with a correct coat. A strong head, scissors bite with complete dentition.  Dark almond shaped eyes. Normal size, normal proportions, substantial strong well developed female with a normal croup and tail set. She stands correctly with straight strong legs, good pasterns and excellent feet.

Her rear ligamentation is very strong and elbows are tight.  She has very good front reach and rear drive. She is a very balanced mover, very free and easy and she travels close to the ground with no wasted effort. The more she worked the better she got.  She never stopped trotting and was always kept on a loose lead by George Berstler.

485 Madison - 6 years old and every bit as beautiful as she was when I gave her Winners Bitch 5 years ago from the 12-18 month class.  Although she has produced several litters her conditioning was excellent.  A confident, noble gal with a strong head, complete dentition, dark almond eyes.

Black and red tan pigmentation and a correct coat.
