Christmas gifts

 for the Shepherd lover

This may well be the easiest list we've ever compiled. All we had to do was write down what we dream about. From people to puppies, from event tickets to a new tack box, you're sure to find something here for every fancier.

Did we forget something? Send us a note!

1 - This is a no-brainer: Someone to come and poop-scoop the yard! We're not sure about the rest of you, but this is sheer drudgery for us, particularly in New England come mid-January. A gift certificate to the local scooping company is the perfect gift.

2 - This is the COOLEST canteen we've ever seen - attractive too. $59

The Canine Canteen Dog Water Fountain

Hooks-up outdoors for your dog or cat - and maybe a neighborhood squirrel or two.
It attaches to the hose. Just turn the spigot.

It's made of resin, but looks like stone and it's studier and larger than the typical bowl.

We also like the weathered verdigris finish, and bronze accents.

3 - Gift certificates with a twist

There are several that caught our attention:

- VISA gift cards are awesome for anyone, but log on to www.giftcardlab.com to buy yours. The company has absolutely INGENIOUS software that allows you to create a customized gift card with photos. Use the recipients favorite GSD photos for a sure hit. You can purchase the cards in amounts from $10 to $250.

- Let your favorite GSD lover make their own T-shirts or sweatshirts with super-cool dog art from toochic.com

- And don't forget: gsdbydesign has gift certificates available in any amount. We'll even make you an 8 by 11.5 certificate to put under the tree.

4 - Ice treat maker

For $30, you can freeze toys and treats in a block of ice. Can you think of anything better for those hot summer circuits?

It keeps the dogs busy, hydrated and cool.
The kit comes with a 96-oz. reusable freezing bucket, with snap-on lid, and a stainless steel tray that stakes into the ground. (It even includes recipes.)

The bone-shaped cap bar holds the ice block in place and a reservoir collects the water as it melts.

5 - Websites make great family gifts. And they get you off the hook for buying multiple presents. Domain names cost less than $30 through AFMU, and you can hire a designer for $250 or less. Bonus: It's something they want and won't buy for themselves!

6 - A pair of tickets to Westminster Kennel Club. The event is being held Feb. 9-10, 2009, at Madison Square Garden. Log on to www.ticketmaster.com or go here for details. Prices start at $40 each.

If your gift recipient isn't big on traveling, you can always pick up video of any breed or group, or BIS.

7 - Speaking of videos, is there any better than one of our National specialties? Bob Lindsay did the honors this year. His 2008 US National disk set costs $135. Contact Bob or Sandy at TWOSANBOB@aol.com.

For the Canadian National, contact John at tamar.kennels@xplornet.com.

8 - A dog (by donation) to Last Hope Safe Haven Rescue, a group of breeders, AKC exhibitors, Schutzhund trainers, and companion animal owners working to rescue GSDs nationwide. It is a 501(c)3 non-profit - all donations are tax deductible. As little as $5 can help save a life.

9 - A Memory Quilt by Ticche and Bea

Love to sew? Here's a fantastic and memorable gift: Tecce and Bea's Memory Quilt, made out of your sentimental T-shirts - like the one you were wearing when your dog went GV.

The do-it-yourself kit is available for $120 and includes pre-cut pieces, a template, very specific instructions and a mailing envelope (in case you get stuck).

Afraid you can't pull it off? For $200, the company will do it for you, using your fabrics.

Bonus: If they sew it, you can simply wrap the cutting template and directions, straight pins, and gift certificate. It also comes with a gift card for the recipient, and a mailing envelope to send it all back.

The final product is a 60" x 60" quilt, bordered and backed in poly chenille fabric.
